Elective Residence Visa: Live Your Dream Life in Italy

Are you an American citizen dreaming of relocating to Italy? The Elective Residence Visa (ERV) is the perfect solution for individuals looking to enjoy life in Italy without the need to work, relying instead on stable and passive income.

What is the Elective Residence Visa?

The ERV is a long-term visa designed for non-EU citizens, allowing you to live in Italy while freely traveling throughout the Schengen Area. This visa is ideal for retirees or individuals with substantial independent financial means who wish to embrace the Italian lifestyle.

Key Requirements
  • Proof of Financial Independence - Applicants must demonstrate sufficient financial resources to support themselves without working:
    • €31,000 annually for single applicants.
    • €62,000 annually for married couples.
      • Accepted income sources include pensions, rental income, dividends, royalties, and other passive earnings. Employment, including remote work, is strictly prohibited.
  • Accommodation in Italy - You must own or rent a suitable property in Italy. Loaned accommodations (such as free-use agreements) are not accepted.
  • Health Insurance - A health insurance policy with a minimum coverage of €30,000 is required for the entire duration of your stay.
How to Apply for the Visa
  • Submit Your Application - Apply at the Italian Embassy or Consulate in the U.S., including all required documentation.
  • Arrival in Italy - After your visa is approved, you’ll need to apply for a residency permit (Permesso di Soggiorno) within 8 business days of arriving in Italy.
  • Optional Enrollment in Italy’s Healthcare System - Once in Italy, you can choose to enroll in the national healthcare system for additional medical coverage.
Renewal and Long-Term Opportunities

The residency permit tied to the Elective Residence Visa can be renewed as long as you continue to meet the original requirements. However, the permit will not be renewed if you have left Italy for a continuous period of more than six months, except in cases of proven serious reasons.

After five years of continuous residence in Italy, you may apply for the EU Long-Term Residence Permit, valid for five years.

After ten years of continuous residence, you become eligible to apply for Italian citizenship, unlocking all the benefits of being an Italian and EU citizen.
